La belle-iloise adopted a plastic reduction strategy several years ago. All the plastic tasting cutlery in our stores has been replaced by Opinel spreading knives. We’ve also replaced our plastic bags with more ecological options: paper bags and reusable, fair trade bags made from organic cotton. In 2019, several of our gift boxes were redesigned in cardboard, like our ‘Drinks with friends’ gift box or our ‘10 spreads’ gift box. All new gift boxes will be designed in a similar manner. La belle-iloise is committed to responsible fishing. We do this by working only with fishermen who share our daily commitment to protecting the environment and natural resources. We prepare different wild fish in compliance with the seasonality of each species, minimum size limits, and by selecting fishing methods. We pay particular attention to the fishing methods our partner fishermen use, selecting the most sustainable for fish species and the seabed (for example, seine fishing for sardines). Depending on the year, we may source 100% of our fish from France, 100% from Brittany, or even 100% from Quiberon, but some years we have to source further south, off the coast of Portugal, where fish is available and the resource is not threatened.
Once the sardines have been removed from the nets, they are stored on the boat in containers or tubs filled with ice. The freshness of the fish is key to its quality, which is why everything caught in the morning will be processed during the day.
La belle-iloise was awarded the Enseigne Responsable Label in 2022. This is an independent label that recognises a company’s commitment and initiatives to be more responsible towards the environment and mankind.
