La belle-iloise adopted a plastic reduction strategy several years ago. All the plastic tasting cutlery in our stores has been replaced by Opinel spreading knives. We’ve also replaced our plastic bags with more ecological options: paper bags and reusable, fair trade bags made from organic cotton. In 2019, several of our gift boxes were redesigned in cardboard, like our ‘Drinks with friends’ gift box or our ‘10 spreads’ gift box. All new gift boxes will be designed in a similar manner. Our sardines come mostly from the Bay of Biscay (from Douarnenez to La Turballe) and a small amount from the English Channel. The sardines are removed from the net and stored in containers or tubs filled with ice. Freshness is a key factor in guaranteeing quality, so all our fish is received and prepared the same day.
La belle-iloise is committed to responsible fishing. We do this by working only with fishermen who share our daily commitment to protecting the environment and natural resources. We prepare different wild fish in compliance with the seasonality of each species, minimum size limits, and by selecting fishing methods. We pay particular attention to the fishing methods our partner fishermen use, selecting the most sustainable for fish species and the seabed (for example, seine fishing for sardines).
