What type of sardine do we put in our tins?

Because we’re committed to using quality products, we only select Sardina pilchardus for our tins. The majority of our fish is caught along the Breton coast (half of which comes from Quiberon) and the Atlantic coast, from the Bay of Biscay to the Irish coast. We also have special agreements with fishermen from Brittany and La Turballe region to source locally as much as possible.

What are the health benefits of eating sardines?

Sardines are full of goodness and contain six nutrients essential for our well-being. The high levels of omega-3 and vitamin B12 reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, while the vitamin D, phosphorus and calcium help to strengthen bones. Sardines are also recommended for athletes because of their high protein content.

How are our sardines prepared?

Our priority is to offer you quality canned fish. We only use fresh sardines caught during the fishing season for our canned products. Every morning, from May to November, we receive sardines fresh off the boat. They’re salted and gutted and their heads are removed. This is all done by hand to preserve the very soft meat. They’re then placed on racks and washed. Once they’re dry, they’re cooked in sunflower oil. The canning process is then carried out by hand by our teams, before being sealed and sterilised in tins.

What are vintage sardines?

Selected for their taste, our vintage sardines are exceptional products. Prepared by expert sardine makers, these sardines have been stored for two years, giving them time to mature and improve. The extra virgin olive oil will bring out the delicate flavours in the fish.

The Réserve box, with its elegant and refined design, is made in Brittany and features 3 tins of sardines from our 2020 vintage: 2 Sardines Saint-Georges in olive oil and 1 Sardines in olive oil and lemon.

Fished off the coast of Brittany between Saint-Guénolé, in Finistère, and La Turballe, in the Loire Atlantique, when the season is at its peak and the sardines are at their plumpest and tastiest, our sardines de garde are identified as "exceptional" as soon as they return from the sea.

Selected for the superior quality of their flesh and their specific fat content, they are processed fresh, trimmed and tinned one by one, by hand. Carefully lined up, they are presented "à blanc", i.e. with the belly, the most fragile part of the fish, facing upwards, a perfect guarantee of quality.

Dressed in a specially selected fruity extra virgin olive oil to preserve them to perfection and enhance their flavour, and then kept in the special reserve at la belle-iloise for several years, time has done its work to sublimate them... Extra-melting, they offer a marriage of iodised and fruity flavours, with an unequalled finesse of taste.

The best way to enjoy them? On their own, with a piece of bread and a touch of salted butter: a taste experience to be shared!

Rich in omega-3, vitamin D, calcium and phosphorus, sardines de garde, like all sardines in oil, offer exceptional nutritional value, preserved for years until the can is opened and enjoyed.
